River’s (stunt) axe

Monday, May 12th, 2008

prop_riveraxestunt.jpgHere’s your chance to own the actual axe River used in the final Reaver battle!

Well, one of the actual ones. I already told you about the metal “hero” one, but now you can own one of the slightly-cheaper rubber stunt ones. Blood included, at no extra charge.

The prop is made from rubber and River can be seen using this Reaver weapon in the fight scene with the Reavers near the end of the film. It is also the same style of weapon that River can be seen holding on the UK poster & DVD cover. It comes framed and glazed in a fantastic suede effect laser cut mount board with the movie logo and two movie stills. The display measures approx. 76cm x 46cm (30″ x 18″).

Serenity weapons on sale at Museum Replicas

Friday, April 4th, 2008

replica_reavers.jpgMuseum Replicas is selling out their licensed Serenity weapon replicas and I don’t think you’re going to see them this cheap again. The Reaver set River wielded, consisting of a katana-like sword and a hand axe, has been marked down from $295 to the closeout price of $150. These are quality, high carbon tempered steel weapons, and they come complete with a full color Serenity wall plaque for display.

Then there’s the Operative’s sword, which was $165 but has been marked down to $99.  One piece, high carbon, tempered steel sword with a wooden grip finished with a wrapped cord, comes complete with an adjustable leather back scabbard with nylon straps.

Seriously, these have never been this reasonable. I’m checking the couch for change even as we speak..

Doll-sized Big… um, Small Damn Weapons

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

stevo_weapons.jpgI’ve mentioned Stevo’s Toys (formerly The Toy Smith) here before, but he’s been adding more stuff. If you’re making your own set of Firefly dolls or if you just want Ken and Barbie to have some protection against those shady Bratz girls, you definitely need to stop by.

Stevo designs sci-fi and movie-inspired weapons and accessories in 1:6 scale, perfect for 12″ figures.  First up, Mal’s gun.

It’s got the familiar outline and, being made of pewter, it’s got some heft. Way better than G.I. Joe’s plastic stuff. It’s sold separately or as a set with the custom holster rig.

We wouldn’t want Zoe going around unarmed, so her modified Winchester Carbine is ready to go. Again, it’s available separately or with her very distinctive holster rig with that unique leather coloring.

So far, Jayne’s just got a knife. But it’s a really nice one, complete with tooled leather sheath. I can only hope that Vera is on her way…

As someone who has been working on a set of Firefly Barbies for some time — or rather, watching in amazement as my wife creates them — I have to say these are easily the finest replica weapons I’ve seen. We had to make do with close-enough versions from other toy dealers, but I’m thinking we’ll be upgrading.

Stevo also had a wide range of other items including Dirty Harry’s .357 magnum, pirate gear, a wide range of classic and modern weaponry, even a selection of felt hats. Check it out!

Serenity-inspired replica weapons

props_peartreeweapons.jpg

The weapons used in “Serenity” were stylized, recognizable at a glance, and unique. Official replicas of several of them were made, priced for collectors, and they seem to have sold out since they are no longer listed at Museum Replicas or TFAW.com. So the next best thing? “Inspired” replicas!

Pear Tree Martial Arts has a variety of almost-authentic “Serenity” weaponry available, at very low prices. Something sort of resembling River’s axe? 30 bucks. Jayne’s Bowie? 25. The Operative’s sword (with scabbard) and the Reaver sword (with stand) are probably the closest to the originals, at $40 and $45 respectively, and there’s something called a “Reaver claw” for $20. While they wouldn’t do for a collector, they would spice up your display shelves and liven up your umbrella stand something fierce, for not much cash. And at least the descriptions suggest someone there likes the movie…

Check out the selection here.

TFAW slashes prices on official Serenity weapon replicas

Friday, January 5th, 2007

replica_reavers.jpgA few months ago I reported that Museum Replicas was offering high quality versions of some dangerous Serenity gear. And they still are, but now Things From Another World is offering them for pre-order at much better prices. Much better prices. First up, River’s set of Reaver weapons.

“The sword is amazingly well balanced and can be held and used much like a Japanese katana, while the small axe makes a perfect side arm. This set of high carbon tempered steel weapons comes complete with a full color Serenity wall plaque, which will allow you to display both of these pieces together.”

Museum Replicas’ price: $295.00. TFAW’s pre-order price: $195.99.

mr_operativesword.jpg

And the Operative’s sword, available now from MR for $165, is $131.99 at TFAW. And you wonder why I plug them so much…

This one piece, high carbon, tempered steel sword is every bit as sleek and balanced as the movie version. The wooden grip is finished with a wrapped cord for extra secure maneuvering. The sword comes complete with an adjustable leather back scabbard, with nylon straps, making it a comfortable addition for any secret operation.

Pair these up with QMx’s Mal pistol and you’ll be ready for most everything.

Flash your ass at the gorram law

wf_Badger_Bulletin.jpg

Now you can wave your own paperwork in the face of stuck-up smugglers and pretentious captains with this prop replica from Whitefall. The Eavesdown Banner, with important news about shipments, tariffs, inspections, and cocky Firefly ships what come afoul of the law when they’re supposed to be bringing you your stuff all quiet-like.

Download it here. It’s almost 3 megs, sized to print nicely.

QMx just launched and the pics are shiny

qmx-serenitymoneypack.jpg

QMx, the brand new prop replica company started by Steve Dymszo (formerly of Master Replicas) just popped up and it’s time to go visit.

As mentioned previously, the first item is a money pack that include 12 bills and a money band, plus a copy of Mal’s map (online orders only; any versions that will pop up in retail stores later will not have the map). These are created from the original graphics files, you can’t get a more accurate replica. Also, if you preorder from the site your pack might have one of 5 “golden tickets” to win actual pre-production artwork signed by either Serenity graphic designers Geoff Mandell or Tim Earls. The money packs will ship in November. The fan club edition is only available for a limited time, $19.99 plus shipping.

qmz_malpistol.jpg

Then there’s Mal’s pistol, and it looks nice. Cast from the original mold, this is identical to the screen version. It’s heavyweight resin, with copper and brass plating and antique black finishing, with a hand-rubbed walnut grip and machined metal hardware. Weighs in at about 2 pounds, and comes with a display stand and metal plaque. Limited to 1500, this puppy’ll run you $249 plus shipping. Look for this to ship later in the year.

If you’re not sure about the price tags, they also offer a layway system called X-Pay that breaks up your costs into three payments. No excuses…

Get over there and register for updates!

Mal’s pistol replica from Wilco Models

Sunday, July 16th, 2006

wilco_malpistol.jpgYou’ve probably seen them at conventions, stacks of white boxes with white resin models in front of them of most every little science fiction gun and doodad imaginable. How could they leave out Mal’s trademark gun?

Foruntately, they couldn’t, and Wilco Models is offering replicas for $40 plus $5 shipping. The models come unassembled in three pieces (for easier painting) and may require sanding. But they look good, have a nice heft to them, and you can’t beat the price. Just e-mail Wilco Models to buy one, or check out their ebay auctions.

New from Whitefall - Mal’s discharge papers

Saturday, July 1st, 2006

wf_dischargepapers.jpgIt helps to put your own mania in perspective when you can keep an eye on someone farther down the obsession scale than you, and for me that’s Whitefall. I’m not sure he sleeps, frankly.

His latest is available at the propcircle.com forum, it’s Malcolm Reynolds’ discharge papers from the Independent Army. Beautifully detailed, ready to print at 200 dpi.

I got River’s stylus

prop_stylus.jpg

Finally I can do all that homework I’ve been putting off all those decades. Despite my constant pimping I haven’t bought much myself from The Prop Store of London — I prefer items that are identifiable as being from the movie in question, instead of generic props, and that tends to price them out of my wallet — but when this popped up within my means I had to grab it.
