Worlds of the Alliance lithograph now on sale

Friday, May 9th, 2008

qmx_wota.jpgIt’s out and for sale: a signed and numbered lithograph of the Worlds of the Alliance, created by Serenity graphic designer Geoffrey Mandel. Order it from TFAW.com or directly from QMx.

Worlds of the Alliance was created by designer Geoffrey Mandel for the classroom scene in the movie Serenity, but was never used because the final set for that scene had no walls. However, Mr. Mandel was still required to create this most authoritative and comprehensive guide to the planets of the ‘Verse yet produced, which was reviewed and approved by director/writer Joss Whedon himself.

When we first saw this fabulous piece of artwork and ‘Verse lore, we just didn’t think it was fair that Browncoats would never get a chance to see, much less own a copy. That’s why we arranged with Universal and Mr. Mandel this opportunity for you to own one of only 1,000 27″x19″ lithographic art prints of the Worlds of the Alliance, hand-signed and numbered by Mr. Mandel himself, for just $39.95.

QMx has a bit more of the backstory from Geoff, and it’s worth checking out.

Limited edition Fruity Oaty Bar lithograph

Friday, April 4th, 2008

qmx_fruityoatbarlitho.jpgI’ve been waiting for this one… New from QMx, a limited edition lithograph of the Fruity Oaty Bar ad, signed and numbered by Serenity graphic designer Geoff Mandel himself.

The Fruity Oaty Bar ad in Serenity is one of the most notable few seconds of film in the movie. Short as the ad is it sticks with you, just like the Mr Sparkle Detergent ad from The Simpsons. As it turns out it was that very ad from the Simpsons that inspired both Joss Wheedon and Serenity designer Geoffrey Mandel to create the Fruity Oaty Bar video that sent River into kill mode.

In the continuing collaboration between the Serenity design team and QMX we are proud to offer you the chance to own one of these limited edition Fruity Oaty Bar lithographs. Each lithograph measures 36″x24″ and is hand signed and numbered by Mr Mandel. It’s shiny!

Each print will be shipped rolled in individual tubes.

$39.95, due out June 11. Order yours now!

Sihnon Prints

Monday, October 16th, 2006

sihnon_prints.jpgThey’re big, they’re damn, and most of all, they’re pretty heroes. It’s not surprising so many people love drawing them, painting them, cartooning them, and otherwise making their own artistic expressions of what this crew means on a personal level.

sihnon_sample.jpgPeople like Mike Phillips, who opened up http://www.sihnonprints.com/ to showcase his work. He has a nice comfortable style drawing our heroes in ways that alternate between old time photographs and people seen in the dim light of a dusk landing.

Make your own CG Serenity

Monday, October 16th, 2006

lightwaveserenity.jpgSome of you may remember the fantastic Lightwave model of Serenity made by Sean Kennedy some time back. If you’re interested in making your own insanely detailed 3D model, he’s been posting a step-by-step tutorial here.

Aside from the cool versy aspects of it, this is also an incredible tutorial on using Lightwave, the VertiBevil plugin, texturing, and more. You’ll need to know the basics or you’ll get lost very quickly, but this tears the old girl apart and examines every minute detail in, you know, detail.

Lots of pictures throughout. You can also find the tutorials in PDF form here, but I advise going through the forum posts because he answers questions as he goes.

BMB’s Serenity Day poster now on sale

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

bmb_dayposter.jpgAdam at Black Market Beagles is making his gorgeous Serenity Day poster, created for the San Francisco Browncoats, available in a limited and numbered run. This is a truly stunning piece of art with a nice retro feel.

Also be sure to check out the rest of the place. Little Damn Heroes, Superbrowncoats, even a Snakes on a Train Job, just to really mix your obsessions. Plenty of great designs you won’t see anywhere else.

Mal Nouveau

Thursday, June 1st, 2006

art_nouveaumal.jpgSaw this on display at Oasis 19 in Orlando last weekend and looked up the artist’s website when I got home (see? the pamphlets work!). Paula Tabor is a fan artist who does fantasy images, portraits of movie and TV stars, caricatures, henna designs, and even her own comic book.

But my eye was on Mal, and who can blame me. Prints of Mal Nouveau are available from her site, slushgem.com, along with plenty more great images (and a River/Simon pic).

But watch where you step… Black Market Beagles features artwork by Adam Levermore-Rich, one of the best and most recognizable Browncoat artists. He’s done posters for Can’t Stop the Serenity events and Browncoat bashes, amazing artwork for QMx’s Battlestar Galactica posters (and designed their website), and his classic Little Damn Heroes series may yet become collectible marquettes.

Interview with Geoffrey Mandel, graphic designer for Serenity

Friday, February 10th, 2006

When you sat spellbound in the movie theater watching the Serenity’s nose art fill the screen, or the star charts for Miranda that River brought up one-handed, you were seeing the work of Serenity graphic designer Geoffrey Mandel. And the odds are good you’ve seen his work before.

Mal Wanted poster - fine art print by Geoffrey Mandel

Tuesday, February 7th, 2006

ebay_malwanted.jpgGeoffrey Mandel, the graphics designer for the movie Serenity, is offering limited edition fine art prints of the wanted poster he designed for the Big Damned Flanvention. 24″ x 18″, offset printed on 100-lb coated gloss cover stock, only 500 copies will be made. Signed and numbered by the artist. (Click the thumbnail for a larger image. Actual print will have unique number and signature)

That’s the official stuff. My unofficial opinion is that this is seriously shiny. Crammed full of details about Mal and his sordid past, with a great pic of Nathan looking defiant and a bit peeved. Geoffrey will be offering this through eBay until they’re gone, so don’t wait too long.

Click here to see his listings. They’re going up for sale one by one, so if you don’t see any listings active at the moment check back later.
