New prop: Kaylee’s belt, again

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

prop_kayleebelt2.jpgNew at The Prop Store of London: the belt Kaylee wore to the Maidenhead Bar. Can’t go clubbing without a good belt… This is the second time this belt has shown up here inside of a month. Maybe the prop Store found the belt bin?

A belt worn by Kaylee (Jewel Staite) in the sci-fi adventure movie Serenity. The black material belt has metal rimmed holes, and can be seen in the scenes in the Maidenhead Bar. Has a brass coloured buckle and is adjustable.

Grab Simon’s shirt! It’ll be the best day ever

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

prop_simonshirt.jpgAha! Got one of the Prop Store in London’s items listed before it sold out! So far… You’re looking at Simon’s shirt.

Simon can be seen wearing this costume in scenes on Serenity after Mal (Nathan Fillion) rescues Inara (Morena Baccarin) and afterwards on Haven. The dark blue shirt with an embroidered collar (no size marked) has ‘Simon’ written in the collar in pen.

It’s amazing they kept it this long…

Faith and Choice in the Works of Joss Whedon

Friday, April 11th, 2008

book_faithandchoice.jpgSorry for the delay in mentioning this, but I just noticed it. “Faith and Choice in the Works of Joss Whedon,” by K. Dale Koontz. Also, I don’t have a copy, as it runs thirty-something bucks. But here’s what the publisher said about it:

Joss Whedon once identified himself as an “angry, hard-line atheist” who is nevertheless “fascinated by the concept of devotion.” While organized religion seems to hold no satisfactory answers for Whedon, his dedication to exploring the meanings of faith and belief can be seen in many of the characters he has created for such works as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, Serenity, and Fray. This work examines a variety of Whedon’s characters and discusses what can be learned from their struggles and discoveries regarding religion and belief.

Part One focuses on the characters’ search for purpose, revealing how Dawn, Spike, and Angel attempt to define the meaning of their lives in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin-off, Angel. Part Two focuses on family, examining the unconventional family dynamic in Whedon’s comic book miniseries Fray and television series Firefly. Part Three centers around the concept of redemption, using Angel’s Doyle, Firefly’s Malcolm Reynolds and Shepherd Book, and Buffy’s Faith Lehane to examine the characters’ search for salvation and their own acceptance of their past actions. Finally, Part Four focuses on the harmful potential of religious zealotry, revealing the negative aspects of absolute belief through Firefly’s River and Buffy’s Caleb. A primary source guide follows the main text, providing the writer, director, and air date of each television episode, along with publication data for Whedon’s print works, including the in-publication “Season 8” comic books for Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Serenity costumes at The Prop Store

prop_costumes.jpg

Or, rather, there were. The last ones to come up for sale sold almost immediately, so me telling you that you could have bought Mal’s shirt and pants, or Inara’s outfit from the last scene, or an Alliance Pilot’s uniform if you had only noticed them in time would just be cruel.

However, you should take this as a suggestion to start monitoring The Prop Store of London a little more closely. And apparently in the middle of the night.

Firefly DVDs coming out on Blu-Ray

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

This has been reported around the place before, since Jewel Staite spilled the beans about an upcoming Firefly DVD release during her talk at the Supernova Pop Culture Expo in Australia recently. But TVShowsonDVD.com has gotten verification from FOX that it is indeed happening, and it will be for Blu-Ray disc format.

Jewel mentioned new commentaries for a special box set, but no other details have been released so far. Keep watching!

Dammit. Now I have to buy a Blu-Ray player…

bms_sale.jpgBlue Moon Stuff, long one of the best sources of cool ‘versy merchandise, decided not to bother figuring out what to put on sale and just went nuts with the sale gun.

“Serenity Adventures” coming for the Serenity RPG

Friday, April 4th, 2008

rpg_serenityadventures.jpgComing this June from Margaret Weis Productions, a new expansion for the award-winning Serenity RPG.

Serenity Adventures is an anthology-style adventure product that features contributions from both established and new talent in the game industry including James M. Ward (Metamorphosis Alpha), Alana Abbot (Into the Reach), and James Davenport (Serenity Role Playing Game).”

No details yet, but I love what they’ve done so far with it. You can preorder this here.

In the meantime, the folks at MW have been producing little add-ons and extras for free download, such as Sam’s Smuggler Emporium and a cortex newsfeed with some interesting info.

Serenity weapons on sale at Museum Replicas

Friday, April 4th, 2008

replica_reavers.jpgMuseum Replicas is selling out their licensed Serenity weapon replicas and I don’t think you’re going to see them this cheap again. The Reaver set River wielded, consisting of a katana-like sword and a hand axe, has been marked down from $295 to the closeout price of $150. These are quality, high carbon tempered steel weapons, and they come complete with a full color Serenity wall plaque for display.

Then there’s the Operative’s sword, which was $165 but has been marked down to $99.  One piece, high carbon, tempered steel sword with a wooden grip finished with a wrapped cord, comes complete with an adjustable leather back scabbard with nylon straps.

Seriously, these have never been this reasonable. I’m checking the couch for change even as we speak..

Limited edition Fruity Oaty Bar lithograph

Friday, April 4th, 2008

qmx_fruityoatbarlitho.jpgI’ve been waiting for this one… New from QMx, a limited edition lithograph of the Fruity Oaty Bar ad, signed and numbered by Serenity graphic designer Geoff Mandel himself.

The Fruity Oaty Bar ad in Serenity is one of the most notable few seconds of film in the movie. Short as the ad is it sticks with you, just like the Mr Sparkle Detergent ad from The Simpsons. As it turns out it was that very ad from the Simpsons that inspired both Joss Wheedon and Serenity designer Geoffrey Mandel to create the Fruity Oaty Bar video that sent River into kill mode.

In the continuing collaboration between the Serenity design team and QMX we are proud to offer you the chance to own one of these limited edition Fruity Oaty Bar lithographs. Each lithograph measures 36″x24″ and is hand signed and numbered by Mr Mandel. It’s shiny!

Each print will be shipped rolled in individual tubes.

$39.95, due out June 11. Order yours now!
