Eerily accurate custom Mal doll on eBay

malfirefly1.jpg

Much as I love the official stuff, there’s no denying that some of the best Serenity merchandise comes from the fans (one reason why QMx keeps hiring them). A perfect example is this custom sculpted 12″ Mal figure.

It started life with a Sideshow body — I’m guessing not a Buffy one — and includes “a real suede Brown coat, leather boots, belt, and holster, and Mal’s unique sidearm.” And frankly it looks better than any of the official Mals yet, although I do have an affectionate preference for my Firefly Barbie Mal.

I don’t know anything at all about this seller, so bid with the usual eBay caution. But damn.

Edgy weapons, again

prop_bloodysword.jpg

The Prop Store of London has some wonderful weapony things for sale. But I think we’ve seen these before…

prop_anotherdart.jpgThe Operative’s sword, in all its bloody glory. And the dart that hit Kaylee. Both mounted with movie stills and a laser-cut logo, both onn sale again, which means either someone returned theirs (possible) or there were more than one available (very likely; propmasters like backups and there were lots made for closeups and stunt work and promotional images, etc.). Either way, here’s your chance.

The sword: This resin bladed weapon has a black plastic handle with black cord inlaid to help give the user a better grip. The blade itself has a repeating rectangular pattern along the top edge which still has fake blood inside. The sword was the weapon of choice for “The Operative” and can easily be spotted in many memorable scenes. This light weight bloody stunt version of the weapon was used during scenes when a close up wasn’t needed for safety on set It measures approximately 74cm (29″) in length and comes custom framed with a laser cut mount board featuring the film’s title and movie stills from the film.

The dart: The prop weapon was used in the scene near the end of the film where Kaylee gets shot by one of the Reavers. Made of metal, it was used in close up scenes, comes framed and glazed in a fantastic suede effect laser cut mount board with the movie logo and a screen still. The display measures 39.5cm x 32.5cm (15.5″ x 12.75″).

Official Ships Papers on sale now

Friday, August 24th, 2007

qmx_papers_front.jpg

QMx’s Official Serenity Ship’s papers set is on sale now at QMx and TFAW.com, and you’ll want to snag it quick because only 1500 were produced and they sold 250 of those in the first six hours.

Those of you who have been SerenityStuff visitors for some time might have been wondering what fan-favorite replica maker Whitefall (Ben Mund) has been doing since he got picked up as one of QMx’s Artisans. Folks, he’s been taking one of his best unofficial prop replicas and making it into an even better official one. This is his set of ship’s papers, with all the documents a captain would want to have handy the next time the Alliance comes calling, in a custom-made leather holder.

Ben’s original replica was a faithful recreation of the one from “Firefly,” which didn’t contain much in the way of actual ‘versy stuff. The pages contained mostly filler, legal boilerplate, and was never intended to be seen up close. After a great deal of work, with input from “Serenity” graphic designer Geoff Mandel and access to tons of source material, this is a brand new, built-from-scratch set of ship’s papers the way it should have been. Insanely detailed, plain fun to read.
