I am Dua Khalil, and you are too
Following Joss’ post on a videotaped honor killing, Adam from Black Market Beagles has created a design to raise money for the cause.
First, if you haven’t yet, go read Joss Whedon’s moving post on Whedonesque.com.
Go. I’ll wait.
Stirring stuff, no? So, about an hour ago, I got an e-mail from a long-time BlackMarketBeagle customer (Dale Koontz) with a fantastic suggestion to create a t-shirt that says “I am Dua Khalil.” As Dale said, “I don’t want this event to fade from public memory with a simple ‘tsk, tsk’ as we move on to the sports page.” I wholeheartedly agree. I think it’s a great way of standing up and being counted among those who refuse to accept this situation as an acceptable status quo. Dua can not speak for herself, so we who can, must. I may be a man, but I, too, am Dua Khalil.
I’ve marked up the shirts $5 above cost, and I plan to donate all of the proceeds to Equality Now. If that makes them too expensive, e-mail me and I’ll sell one to you at cost or at whatever markup you feel comfortable with.

Wow. As moved as I was by Joss’s words, I think I’m even more moved by this gesture. Especially by the fact that the idea came from a man. As a woman, I applaude you all. I’m definilty getting one of your shirts. Once I stop crying that is and once a say a little prayer in hopes that one day… gestures like this… will no longer be needed.
Adam is wonderful, isn’t he? We need more like him – and Joss. But, in the interest of truth, I gotta say I contacted Adam with the idea (but he would’ve come up with it, I’m sure of it. He’s that kind of guy) and I’m as much of a girl as Kaylee.
It doesn’t really matter, of course. We’re ALL Dua Khalil – that’s the whole point.
Hi. I run the website at stophonourkillings.com, and recently chaired a meeting at Amnesty International where the speakers were Iraqi and Kurdish women’s rights campaigners. I’d be much obliged if you’d check out the site and taked to me. Thanks, Joanne ICAHK.
