Happy ‘versary, Serenity!
One year ago today, thanks to the tireless efforts of Joss and the cast, Universal Studios, and some thousands of fans, we got to go back to the black.
Critically acclaimed, less-than-a-blockbuster, controversial among the fans, “Serenity” made its mark in cinema history on several levels and left our Big Damn Heroes (most of them, anyway) with exciting new directions. It was both a fitting end to the TV series and an enticing beginning to a potential movie series that may never happen but hasn’t been ruled out, either.
Today is a good day to watch the movie again and thank Joss and Universal for bringing it to us. Here’s some suggestions:
Watch it
Get together with some friends and relive the excitement. Check your local Browncoat groups for big screen showings like the ones at Bryn Mawr in Pennsylvania. Watch it on HBO.
Buy it
I’d be surprised if anyone reading this doesn’t own at least one copy, but you can still buy them for different platforms, or for friends and family, or to donate to local libraries, or to send to soldiers. And keeping sales up helps tell Universal that its still a viable product.

Download it
You might have it for your TV, but how about your iPod? Your computer? Your massive PC-driven home theater system? Get it from MovieLink.
Thank Universal
You could also buy the movie straight from Universal’s shop as an immediate gesture. And be sure to stop by www.bigdamnthankyou.com to post your thanks and photos and artwork to send Universal the message that we really appreciate all they’ve done for us.
You can also e-mail Universal today with a nice thank you note.

BDM On The BDS
YeeeEHAW!
Saw “Serenity” on the big screen last night!
Great experience all the way around.
My sons and I got there early, as expected.
“Mal” was already there, so we talked to him a bit.
Various Browncoats filtered in to the Cafe at the theater front for
the pre-showing mini-shindig.
Lotsa chatter and a real nice mix of people.
All ages, both sexes and all manner of shiny dress; from street
clothes to T-shirts to costumes.
I’m not a good crowd size guesser but I’d say 50 to 75 people.
Pre-show activities included
telling a favorite fan happening story
reading two person scenes from Firefly
and some trivia questions once the group adjourned to the theater.
All the fan stories were fun to hear and even my least favorite had a
funny punch line.
Oh, and there is just somethin’ downright unsettlin’ about a six foot
two-ish, deep-voiced Inara doing a scene with a five-elevenish Mal!
Those who wore a costume had a chance to win a Serenity Tee.
“Mal” won and the second place costume was the actual screen
used “Guy Left Behind At The Lilac Trading Station” costume purchased
from the Propstore In London. Well, except for the shirt, cuz if you
remember Mal shot him in the chest. Point is, I think its great that
a fan bought that costume and wore it to an event so we could all
check it out! Shiny!
There were a couple of lovely Inaras and a Kaylee and I saw Jayne
hats on and off throughout the night.
Just a mention, but the theater is non-profit.
I bought three cans of soda and a bucket of popcorn and it only came
to $6.75. Yikes! Last time I went to the movies my food bill ran
like forty bucks! I gave the cashier a ten and said to keep the
change; whether it was a tip or a donation doesn’t matter to me. The
staff were all just great and I so appreciate the existance of a
place like that to see non-first-run movies on the big screen.
Finally, seeing Serenity on the big screen.
I loved it, but it does confirm for me that seeing movies on TV is
different from a theater and both have their advantages.
I think I like the River bar fight scene on TV a little better
because all the action is so tight and immediate. But I’m telling
you, there is NOTHING like that Mule-Reaver skiff chase on the big
screen! Holy Cow! It’s like you are right there, skiff bearing down
bigger’n life, the sound and the size just pulling you in! I’m not
going to do a scene by scene analysis. Just suffice to say that for
me, big screen Serenity was a different and wonderful experience I
look forward to repeating. (tonight, let’s say…)
Looking forward to seeing all who make it to the Harrisburg Shindig
and the Bryn Mawr Film Institute showing tonight.

I went out on Saturday and bought another copy of the Big Damn Movie. I figure I’ll buy one every couple of months and hopefully other Browncoats doing the same will, little by little, make Universal see that there is still money to be made off this franchise!
