The Serenity ornament is SHINY!

Oh, the wonders my mailbox had for me today: I got my Serenity ornament! This, this is a gorgeous thing.
The ornament from Dark Horse Deluxe is 6 1/2″ long and full detailed, with a nice heft to it. Light enough to be a Christmas ornament (it comes with a detachable hook and loop in the top) but heavy enough to fit snugly on the enclosed optional base. It’s sort of a bronzy gun metal color, with blue on the panels and the engine flames. The base is black with felt pads; Serenity fits on top at an angle for a mid-swoop effect. Bigger pics below.

It’s not a toy. A little too fragile to play with, the place where the engines attach to the engine struts is too weak to bounce around. Nitpickers will find problems - little rough on some of the details, no Serenity insignia on the side, etc — but tough. You gotta get one of these things.

Fortunately, that part’s easy. You can buy it at Things From Another World, Poplollies, 258 West Authentic, and your local comic store.
Or you try to win one of three I’m giving away this month, thanks to TFAW. Just post a comment somewhere on this site and you’ll be entered to win. Details here.

My sister has given me Hallmark Star Trek ornaments starting with the original Enterprise from TOS. You can imagine what my Chrismahanukwanza tree looks like. This Serenity would look AWESOME on my tree!

Seems just a bit too shiny, if that’s even possible.
August 20th, 2006 at 6:31 am
oooooooo I want one
August 20th, 2006 at 8:14 am
Does anyone know how to get them in Europe ? It’s so expensive and complicated ordering from the U.S.
August 20th, 2006 at 9:15 am
Now that’s a beautiful model. I’m gettin’ all misty-eyed already…
August 20th, 2006 at 9:21 am
Does the primary buffer panel come off?
August 20th, 2006 at 9:22 am
Shiny! I wonder if I can get one shipped to Korea.
August 20th, 2006 at 10:12 am
Thanks for sharing photos, this is definitely shiny!
August 20th, 2006 at 10:37 am
I kind of like that it doesn’t have the Serenity logo on it. That way, you can have a fleet of Fireflies — and they won’t all be Serenity (which would be bizarre in a space-time continuum sort of way).
August 20th, 2006 at 11:13 am
Oh, I can’t wait for my next paycheck, as that looks too shiny for words.
August 20th, 2006 at 11:15 am
Now that’s just too cool. It will look great sitting on my bookshelf.

August 20th, 2006 at 11:29 am

August 20th, 2006 at 11:42 am
Not to be redundant, but - that’s just SHINY! Totally worth having, and giving out as a gift to my Browncoat family and friends. Can’t wait to snag a couple.
August 20th, 2006 at 11:50 am
That looks wonderful. I really need to stay away from this site when I’m trying to budget.
August 20th, 2006 at 12:26 pm
I’m definitely just posting for the chance to win one of these.
August 20th, 2006 at 12:34 pm
Finally!! I’m glad it is as shiny as it is ’cause folks have been awaiting this a mighty long time.
August 20th, 2006 at 12:43 pm
hehe they should make an alliance cruiser in a comparable scale. guess that wouldn’t fit on my desk though
August 20th, 2006 at 12:47 pm
Is it filled with tiny cows?
August 20th, 2006 at 12:50 pm
Simply stunning! Now I have to have one, of course!
August 20th, 2006 at 1:32 pm
*Jaw drops in awe* *Re-looks at the pictures just to make sure* *Picks up jaw from the floor to say the following:* I can see why it took so long to come out. The detailing is great (yes, there are nitpicks, but look at the rest of the details!)! It’s beyond just being shiny — and I need to get one.
August 20th, 2006 at 1:33 pm
Shiny! Just waiting for my comic book store to get them in. Maybe I’ll go check again today.
August 20th, 2006 at 2:55 pm
Wow, very shiny. I have to get me one, too. :)
August 20th, 2006 at 4:00 pm
Man I want one,I wonder if you can get them in shops.
August 20th, 2006 at 5:14 pm
It may not be a toy, but that didn’t stop me from running about with it, with the occasional utterance of ‘I’m a leaf on the wind…’
At least, for a little while…
August 20th, 2006 at 5:17 pm
I’ve got two on order, one for home and one for my office, so I can always have one near me!
August 20th, 2006 at 6:10 pm

August 20th, 2006 at 6:16 pm

Thanks for posting these great pics.

More silver colored than I thought it would be.
I’ll have to get at least one of these for myself and maybe one for my Browncoat friend as a Christmas present.
I wonder how many they are making of these…

I tend to get these from friends in a forum (batch orders) I wonder if it can be done with this item also. I want it really bad :D
August 21st, 2006 at 9:12 am
At this model’s scale, how big should the Serenity logo be? Maybe I can print myself up a sticker to fit in the right place.

Cool!! A must have!
August 21st, 2006 at 9:44 am

I got to get me one of these.
August 21st, 2006 at 10:32 am
Cool. Mine is on it’s way, it just hasn’t arrived here yet.
Can’t wait to see it!
August 21st, 2006 at 11:11 am
That is just about the best piece of merch out there. Beautiful.
August 21st, 2006 at 11:32 am
Absolutely amazing. The detail is brilliant. I’ve been meaning to pick one of these up for a while now, I didn’t know they were actually out yet, heh (I thought I was getting one for my birthday as well, this month). Guess I’m going to have to pick one up as soon as I can (that’s if I don’t win this shiny competition)!
August 21st, 2006 at 12:20 pm
Really nice attention to detail on the ornament. Thanks for the close-up photos. :)
August 21st, 2006 at 2:16 pm
thanks for the pics - it really does look good!!! Like others on here I didnt know it was out so thanks for the heads up :)
August 21st, 2006 at 3:11 pm
Hi, got 3 of them today, great item.
August 21st, 2006 at 3:20 pm
I saw the prototype casting at Flan I, but what I saw was just the base cast, and didn’t have the nice paint job to make it all shiny. THis is gorgeous. I definitely gotta get me one, or two, or let’s see, three. Hmmmmm :)
August 21st, 2006 at 3:39 pm
Oh my goddess! Must have that NOW!
August 21st, 2006 at 4:29 pm
Oooh! I need to find that. I need one for me and two for my Browncoat kids. If they buy their own, then I guess I’ll just keep them all. :-D
August 21st, 2006 at 9:37 pm
Too much fun — I can imagine it suspended mid air!
August 21st, 2006 at 11:04 pm
Wow, I suddenly got fan-girl excited and freaked out my dogs. This is….amazing. I love how detailed and SHINY it is! I can’t wait to pilot it….er…buy it.
August 22nd, 2006 at 4:52 am
Wow, that’s a really nice ornament. Each year each of my family members hangs a silly ornament on the tree that they usually go on about being their favorite and such. I think I may just get one of these and then I’ll have a favorite too, even if it doesn’t fit any sort of Christmas theme. ;)
August 22nd, 2006 at 9:40 am
wow it looks fantastic. i wish i could afford one but im broke and i am Australian so i would have to pay double the price which unlucky. i hope more models of serenity and other ships etc would be made.
August 22nd, 2006 at 10:16 am
Shiny! I can’t wait to get one! But will have to until I can afford one…
August 22nd, 2006 at 1:00 pm
This little beauty beats that ol’ Bird of Prey ornament all to Hell! I can just see it now, ornament dogfights around the tree. All we need now is an Ariel ambulance and an Alliance tree-topper. (’Cause, well, they think they’re always on top of everything.)
August 22nd, 2006 at 4:40 pm
I’m like one to eat.
August 22nd, 2006 at 9:49 pm
Supposedly, mine is on the way. USPS tracking sez it’s in cincinatti; why? Beats me! Will be shiny indeed when mine arrives. :)
August 23rd, 2006 at 1:34 am
Ooooh, me likey. Thanks for posting the photos!
August 23rd, 2006 at 8:40 pm
My Serenity ornaments have arrived. The quality is outstanding and is every bit as good as the pre-release photos depicted. They are made of plastic and are very light but durable, including the solar panels. The fine detail is amazing right down to turbine blades in the engine intakes, engine struts under the wings, small engine nozzles on the back and a shuttle on each side. The color is a flat gray pewter with some highlight colors, that seem to have been painted on by hand. The hanger hook and cord are removable for display on the stand. There appear to be no blemishes or pits in the plastic. The ornaments were packaged in sturdy cardboard boxes and Styrofoam with bright images of the product on the four sides and the Serenity logo on the lid. You can’t go wrong for the price and I may order more as Christmas gifts.
August 25th, 2006 at 4:56 pm
Wow! That’s even more gorgeous than I was expecting! The early preview pics just didn’t do it justice ;) Hopefully I can scrape up some cash soon to buy one, but if not, there’s always Christmas… (assuming they’re still around then *gulp*).
August 25th, 2006 at 5:55 pm
Simply exquisite. Thank you for the pictures.
August 25th, 2006 at 8:44 pm
oh man that is awesome!! i have got to get one!!
August 26th, 2006 at 2:36 am
Got mine, and I was thrilled right from the start of seeing the box……wow! It was worth waiting for such great quality and attention to detail. The box is a thing of beauty, and nice and BIG! The ornament itself is lovely, and very, very well protected inside said fantastic box.
One thing I love is that the ornament sits on the stand at a sort of flying angle, and you can rotate it with your finger for different views. It also looks great from all angles……front, side, behind, whatever and the slant they have it at always looks good. Seriously, this thing is awesome. I might have to have another to keep mint in the box. That’s not something I normally do, but with this I might.
Worth the wait, worth the price……shiny in every way. And the poplollies package was as fun as ever to receive
August 26th, 2006 at 2:44 pm
That is really cool. I need to get one of those.
August 27th, 2006 at 3:00 am
Good lawd that is shinilicious!
..must..not..compulsively…buy….no…$$…
August 27th, 2006 at 10:06 pm
Serenity lands in New Zealand!
Looks a lot better than the photos. Sure, I’m just posting this so I can win one to give to my son, he can’t have this one…
August 28th, 2006 at 1:57 pm
I got mine just this past Saturday. And it is brilliant. But one strange thing makes me scratch my head.
The one I got is NOWHERE near the shiny silver color that yours is. Mine is actually pretty dark. I mean lots of darker grays than the one in the pictures. Especially the “head” (Cockpit area). It’s soooo dark gray/black that I thought it was supposed to symbolize how many times Serenity had been scortched from when she was entering atmo.
So having looked at your pics I have come to the conclusion that I may have to order another one in hopes of getting a nice and shiny one (Sometime after D*C though). But that being said, I recommend all of y’all get one of your own. No matter what color it is, you’ll be glad you did.
August 28th, 2006 at 3:43 pm
If it helps, mine was in a display case — which a friend had just given me that day, coincidentally — with a light directly over the ornament. I think that’s why my pics came out so clearly, I didn’t have to use the flash.
The one sitting here on my desk at work looks darker.
Not that I post here while I’m at work. Ahem.
September 3rd, 2006 at 4:17 pm
I really want to get one, but everyone seems to be sold out…
September 5th, 2006 at 4:03 pm
I’m guessing you don’t order online? All three of the shops linked above — TFAW, Poplollies, and 258 West — have them in stock, and many online comics stores do as well.
If you prefer to buy locally, and no reason you shouldn’t, check the comics stores (if there are any) and have them order you one if they don’t have any handy.
October 18th, 2006 at 4:59 pm
I bet with a little effort tiny cows could be found.
November 29th, 2006 at 10:55 am
I have one sitting on top of my television. She’s always flyin’… I’d love another to put on my Christmas tree!
March 9th, 2007 at 6:27 am
I’m trying to get a Serenity Ornament but live in the UK and need one within 2 weeks (it’s a present)! Any ideas?
Thanks
July 20th, 2007 at 4:01 pm
That is a Sweet Ornament!
January 2nd, 2008 at 5:54 pm
Buy an ornament like this, take good care of her, she’ll be with you the rest of your life….
