Interview: Serenity novelization writer Keith R. A. DeCandido

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

serenity_novel.jpgOne year ago today, more or less, the Serenity novelization hit the shelves. Some of us avoided it like the plague, not wanting to know anything before we were in the theater and the lights went down. Some of us — and I’m not admitting anything — went driving through several cities trying to find a copy because Amazon takes a whole two days to deliver.

The Firefly Companion, Vol. One

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

Out early, finally, Titan Books has given us a wonderful gift in the Firefly Companion.

Designed with the same style and attention to detail as their Serenity Companion, the Firefly Companion is utterly crammed with cool stuff. I was blown away. Let me see if I can get the idea across.

Since Firefly came out, I have read every article and interview I could find. I’ve read Joss and Tim’s reviews of each episode, I’ve heard the commentaries again and again, I’ve hovered around all the websites and just absorbed it all. And yet this book has something new for me on almost every page.

Freakin’ at the Browncoat Ball

Saturday, August 26th, 2006

bmb_browncoatball.jpg

This year the Browncoat Ball, a shindig based on, well, “Shindig,” is being hosted by the San Francisco Browncoats so you know it’s going to be great. Dinner parries, tours of the Bay, even a visit to Chinatown is in store for you. September 22-24, and you can head here for details.

But even if you can’t make it, you can still support it and pick up some sweet merchandise at the same time. The official design for the Ball is by Adam of Black Market Beagles, and that’s all I needed to hear. Check it out, on posters, T-shirts, bags, and more.

Welcome to Washtown

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

I see absolutely no reason why your Second Life should be any less obsessive than your first, and apparently neither do these people.

Second Life is an immersive 3D environment where you create an avatar to represent yourself, and you travel through the worlds interacting with other avatars and reshaping the world to suit yourself. People design their own luxury mansions, their own skyscrapers, their own amusement parks and nightclubs and sex grottos. So, naturally, some virtual Browncoats got together to make the crappy little town where Wash is a hero. And now they have their own Firefly.

Another signed dino from Wash

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

prop_signedlilreddino.jpgThey must have had Alan Tudyk stashed in a room somewhere signing these things for hours.

The Prop Store of London has yet another little plastic dinosaur. Dunno if it ever had screen time or if it was just another plastic wannabe (stunt dino? stand-in?), but it is signed by Wash, so there’s that.

Get your Amazon Companion now

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2006

Wait, I meant “Get your Firefly Companion at Amazon now,” I’m pretty sure.

After an odd scheduling blip that resulted in the Firefly Companion Vol. 1 from Titan Books getting shipped out to comic stores a month or two before the official US release, they’re now available at Amazon for those of us without a handy comics store nearby (ahem).

Joss Whedon’s cult sci-fi Western series Firefly may have had a curtailed existence on TV, but it has since become a phenomenon on DVD, spawning the hit movie Serenity and inspiring legions of dedicated fans, whose numbers are still growing today. This, the first of two lavishly illustrated official companions, is a must, whether you’re already a loyal Browncoat, or just discovering the ’Verse. Covering all aspects of the making of the show, this Big Damn Book features:

  • Exclusive new interviews with Joss Whedon, the cast, executive producer Tim Minear and many other writers and crewmembers.
  • Full, uncut shooting scripts for the episodes ‘Serenity’, ‘The Train Job’, ‘Bushwhacked’, ‘Shindig’, ‘Safe’ and ‘Our Mrs. Reynolds’, annotated with comments from the cast and crew.
  • Scores of rare and previously unpublished images, including behind-the-scenes shots, production art, and original Firefly props and costumes photographed especially for this book.

The US edition is available from Amazon now and it’ll be available through Amazon UK within a week, both at discounted prices.
