Firefly starter set DVD coming out in Germany

Sunday, April 23rd, 2006

dvd_fireflystartergerman.jpgJust noticed this at whedonesque.com: on May 4th there’s a Firefly starter set DVD coming out in Germany with the first two episodes on it. No extras, apparently no subtitles, in German, but it’s under 5 euros (little over 6 bucks American). Not bad!

This is the equivalent of the Buffy starter sets you may have seen in the cheap racks at Target. When the entire season DVD is only $25 (as it is, at the moment, at both Amazon and Wal-Mart, among others) this may not seem like a great deal, but the German edition of the Firefly season set is 48,95 EUR, about $60. This is a great way to entice people to watch the show, and could you have watched the first two episodes (in order) and not wanted to see the whole season?

BTW - Serenity has dropped to #32 on Amazon’s Top DVD Seller list, but Firefly still holds steady at #11. This cheers me up like you wouldn’t believe.

Kinda eerie when your computer stares back at you like that, ain’t it? Three different sizes to fit your monitor, you know the drill.

June 23rd - watch the movie, buy the movie

Saturday, April 22nd, 2006

ad_serenitynow.jpgThis June 23rd is going to be a busy one, with your help.

It’s the anniversary of the third advance screening of Serenity. It’s Joss Whedon’s birthday. And it’s the focus of two movements among the Browncoat community.

First, Serenity Now/Equality Now is looking to get screenings of Serenity set up in as many theaters as possible, worldwide. Currently more than 23 screenings in four countries on three continents are planned, with (hopefully) more to come. Proceeds will go to Joss’ favorite charity, Equality Now! If you’re interested in getting a screening set up in a city near you — and you know you are — head to cantstoptheserenity.com for important details on contact information.

Play dress up with Summer

Friday, April 21st, 2006

games_paperdolls.jpgStardoll.com (formerly Paper Doll Heaven) has added Summer Glau for your sartorial pleasure. Dress her up in any number of different clothing combinations, change the color of her hair, eyeshadow, and lips, and save your creations to share with friends.

OK, she’s in a very unRiver pose, there are no Riveresque outfits, and her hair appears brushed. But other that that… So where’s the rest of the crew? Where’s Morena and her filmy outfits, or Gina and her leathers? For that matter, where’s Adam with his t-shirts and guns, or Nathan with his one pair of pants, brown coat, and pretty floral bonnet? You’ve got some catching up to do, Stardoll!

A Chinese book and River’s forehead-thing

Friday, April 21st, 2006

prop_riverthing.jpgThis in from The Prop Store of London: a Chinese book used as set dressing for Inara’s room, and a truly individual item: the funky forehead medical torture thing that was on River’s head when Simon busted her out of the “academy.”

Buy it and surprise Summer Glau at a convention! Scary monsters…

Tim Minear screenwriting DVD: Breaking the Story

Thursday, April 20th, 2006

dvd_timminear.jpgTim Minear (writer/occasional director/exectuive producer for Firefly) gave a seminar on breaking a story at the 4th Screenwriting Expo in Los Angeles last year, and it’s available on DVD. And I just watched it. And it’s good.

The idea is that the auditorium is a huge writer’s room, and they’re all writing an episode of Angel. Audience members pitch ideas and if he doesn’t think they’ll work he explains why, if he thinks he can use part of the idea he will, and if he likes the idea he gets a delighted look on his face and writes them up on the white board.

Companion training stuff, Inara’s dress, and… a Firefly prop?

Thursday, April 20th, 2006

prop_fireflytoken.jpgNew from The Prop Store of London: an ink pot and graphic from the deleted Companion training scene (the calligraphy translates to “Talking will not achieve sincerity”) and Inara’s outfit from when Mal rescued her — sort of — from the Operative.

And a prop from Firefly (!), one of the gambling tokens that was used in the card game in “Shindig.” How cool is that? Metal and engraved with an Oriental design, it comes in one of the Prop Store’s elegant displays, with a screenshot of the tokens being used in the show and a laser-cut Firefly logo. There’s a nice bunch of chores you won’t have to do… Update: I checked with the Prop Store; sadly this is not heralding a new flood of Firefly props, it was a lucky acquisition with the Serenity items. Sigh. But we’ll take what we can get.

Adam and Jewel are Doing the Impossible

Wednesday, April 19th, 2006

donetheimpossible.jpgProduction update about the upcoming Firefly/Serenity fan DVD, “Done the Impossible:” it sounds even better than we thought it would.

“In looking back at the news, it looks like we never formally announced that Adam Baldwin is hosting our DVD. So consider this the official announcement. We shot our hosting bits with him back in December, the day before Flanvention. He was so cool to work with. The consummate professional.
